What is Wood Badge?
WOOD BADGE is the advanced scout leader training course. Begun in 1919 by Lord Baden-Powell, founder of Scouting and Wood Badge’s first director, it came to America in 1948. Continually updated to reflect the current BSA policies and programs, incorporate the latest material and utilize the techniques available, Wood Badge has become the most advanced leadership training course in Scouting! In this course, Scouters learn practical leadership skills in a lecture-practice format. The skills taught are applicable to every leader and provide a common foundation for Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Venture programs. The first part of the course utilizes a classroom environment and practical exercises to teach the essentials of leadership. You’ll learn what makes leadership “work,” and how to make it work for you and in your unit. Later, a combination of classroom and outdoor settings help you learn to apply those skills to make you function better as a team. Finally, you will have an opportunity to state your goals as a leader and put into motion a plan to achieve those goals.
Who Can Attend?
Any Scouter who has attended basic training for their registered position and serves in a leadership role in Scouting or in a position that directly supports a Scout pack, troop, team, or crew can attend.
What is the Cost?
The course fee is $150.00. The fee covers all meals, all equipment, and course materials.
How Do I Sign Up?
Scouters wishing to accept this invitation should fill out the registration form and send it to the Viking Council office along with a $50.00 non-refundable deposit to reserve a space in the course. Please do this as soon as possible, as space is limited. The balance of the course cost is due May 31, 2002.
What is a Ticket?
A ticket is simply a written set of goals. These serve as an agreement with yourself to apply what you’ve learned during the course. You will have up to 18 months to complete these goals. A counselor will be assigned to help complete your ticket and provide guidance and encouragement along the way. Upon completion of your ticket, you will receive the Wood Badge training recognition, including the Wood Badge neckerchief, woggle, and beads.
What Else Do I Need to Know?
A standard BSA physical exam form must be completed and sent prior to the start of the course. The correct form will be mailed to you upon receipt of your acceptance.
In order to graduate, you must attend and participate in all sessions of the course, including both weekends and several meetings between the course weekends.
Official BSA uniform, including shirt, pants, socks, and belt are worn throughout the course. You probably already have these for your position.

The
ScoutingBSA.org web site is a
legacy site of the Viking Council BSA, now Northern Star Council.
This site was the original council site and was active from 1996 to
2002 and run by volunteers. As the web became more important to
Scouting, the council took over with paid staff. This site is no
longer maintained but is an interesting snapshot of an early Scouting
web site. You can share your comments using our
