What to Expect From Your Unit Commissioner

Your Unit Commissioner has volunteered to assist your unit as a friend, counselor
and mentor to unit leaders. As a believer in the ideals of Scouting,   your 
Unit Commissioner   is there to help build enthusiasm, provide encouragement, 
and to assist you in strengthening and improving your Scouting program.

Your Unit Commissioner will:

· Help your unit earn the quality Unit Award.

· Visit unit meetings regularly, usually once a month.  This may be in person, 
   by phone, at Troop or Pack meetings, Roundtable, Committee meetings or 
   at other events.  The key is to maintain contact!!

· Visit regularly with the unit leader(s) to:

- Listen and keep abreast of unit activities and concerns; 
- Offer encouragement and support; 
- Maintain good leader relationships; 
- Help identify opportunities for improvement; 
- Encourage unit participation in district/council events and training.

· Help ensure an effective unit Parent Committee by:

- Periodic visits with the Parent Committee; 
- Observation of the Parent Committee; 
- Offering suggestions for improvement; 
- Working to solve problems.

· Make certain that proper techniques are used to select and recruit unit leaders.

· Facilitate on-time charter renewal.

· Contact the head of the chartered organization following charter renewal to 
  describe the unit's progress and to make arrangements for the 
  charter-presentation ceremony.

· Keep the unit informed of resources available to the unit from your 
  neighborhood, district, and council.

· In the event of a situation of need, any of the Unit Commissioners, the 
  District Commissioner or the District Executive can be called upon to help
  a unit in need, but always work with the Commissioner staff whenever
  possible.  They are trained and they are experienced in unit leadership.
